Who is Prophet Abraham in Bible, Koran and Sahaja Yoga – Primordial Guru, Life Story & Teachings

Sahaja Yoga: “Abraham never said that he was the incarnation, though he (Abraham) was the Incarnation of the Primordial Master“.

(Shri Mataji -the founder of sahaja yoga meditation, conference in UK, 1979-12-02)

The Koran: “When his Lord put Abraham to the proof  by enjoining on him certain commandments and Abraham fulfilled them, his Lord said: I have appointed you a Leader of Mankind`.

The New Testament: “Jesus said to them: If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did. Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?  You see that Faith was active along with his Works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says `Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness`—and he was called a Friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

The Old Testament: “Abraham is going to become a great and mighty nation and through him all the nations of the earth will be blessed. I have chosen him so that he will Direct his Children and his family after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just.”

What Abraham`s Name means & The Origins for Three Religions

Old Testament: `No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the Father of a Multitude of nations.`

Abraham, and his son, Isaac, and Isaac’s son, Jacob are considered to be the three patriarchs. A patriarch is a founding father or a leader (like a religious guru) of a certain religion. According to the Torah and the Bible ( in the Old Testament -Genesis, as well in the New Testament), Abraham (known as Abram until he was 99 years old and he was renamed by God as Abraham) was the father of the Hebrews, so the founder of Judaism, the Hebrew religion.

The Old Testament: `(The Lord) he took Abram outside and said, “Now look up at the sky and count the stars, if you are able to count them“, he (the Lord) also said to him: “That`s how many descendants you will have!“. Then Abram believed the Lord and the Lord regarded that faith to be his approval of Abram.`

Further on, the generation of Jesus Christ is traced back to Abraham, thus Christianity itself venerates Abraham as its patriarch.

The Arabs trace their ancestry to Ishmael, Abraham’s oldest son, so in the effect the tribes of Israel and those of Arabia who are have a history of conflicts (up to our days) are descendants from the half-brothers Isaac and Ishmael and share their ancestry with Abraham. Abram means exalted father while  Abraham means father of a multitude.

Abraham lived between the XVIII and XVI century BC and grew up in Ur (Mesopotamia). Stories about his life are narrated both in the Bible (Genesis) and in the Qu’ran (Koran). At that time, people believed in idols and made sacrifices to them by means of primitive rituals. Abraham`s legacy consists in his strong faith and complete surrender to the only One God he recognized from within, since his childhood.

Common Stories from Jewish (Midrash) & Koran SourcesAbraham’s Life: One God & NO Idol

Both in Koran as well in the Jewish religious literature, called the Midrash, we find the following significant story. As a child, Abraham started investigating the origin of the creation. First, he looked for his father’s advice, who was working in a shop, selling idols. Abraham`s father promptly replied:

“This idol created the world!”;

surely Abraham did not believe his father and asked his uncle who told  him:

“the moon and the stars created the world”.

Abraham was not quite sure if that was true, but he got an idea that there might be an almighty up in the heavens who created the world: Yahvè. Abraham breaks all the idols except the biggest:

“So he took a stick, broke them, (the idols) and put the the stick in the hand of the largest.”

When his father returned he (and maybe other people) demanded,

‘What have you done to them?'”

Abraham claims: “The biggest idol took the stick, and broke the others.”

We need to empathize with the people of Abraham’s time to comprehend the absolute value of his relationship with God. Idolatry was the common practise at that time, which could turn into vicious and inhuman practices: certainly it had nothing to do with Pure Inner Devotion towards God. Abraham reached this understanding in his young age and tried with many difficulties to bring his people into this new, more evolved belief. This aspect of Abraham is mostly reported in:

The Koran: “And Abraham when he said to his people, ‘Serve God and fear Him, which is better for you if you did but know.  You only serve beside God idols and do create a lie. Verily, those whom you serve beside God cannot control for themselves provision; then crave provision with God, and serve Him, and give thanks to Him; unto Him shall ye return!…’ But the answer of his people was only to sayKill him or burn him!’. Abraham is seized and delivered up for judgement to be killed in the fire but the Lord saved him:

“When Abram descended into the fiery furnace, was saved.

And one day, finally, God talked to him:

«Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.

I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you;

I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse;

and All peoples on earth will be blessed through you».

So Abraham left and moved, with his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot, towards the promised land that was Canaan (located in the current Israel). As a period of famine came, he and his wife went down to Egypt where they lived for some years and then returned back in Canaan. As the time passed, the promised progeny was not yet arriving: Abraham and Sarai (her name was also changed later on by God, to Sarah that means Princess) were already old and have not born any child. So Sarai had suggested to Abraham to have a child from her servant, Hagar, and this son was called Ishmael -who is considered one of the patriarchs of the Islamic religion. Even if Sarah had passed the age of childbearing, God was sent news of his yet delayed promise: a child of Abraham and Sarah and the child finally arrived (when they were more than 80) and was called Isaac (Who Laughs – because Sarah had laughed hearing this unbealievable promise from God). Later, the faith of Abraham was once more tested by God, as He, the Almighty, asked him to sacrifice his most beloved son. The devoted Abraham made up an altar and was there about to kill his son, when an Angel of God stopped him as he passed this ultimate test of faith. Abraham died when he was 175 years old.

Sahaj Understanding of Shri Abraham – The Guru that Initiated the Monoteist Belief to Many Nations

Shri Abraham – as he is reffered to in Sahaja Yoga meditation – represents one of the 10 primordial incarnations of the Primordial Guru, the eternal principle that resides in our Void area, the green circular patch that can be seen in the chakra chart that we are using during our Halton classes. We learn to awaken the subtle energy and the qualities for the Void by either saying the various Guru mantras or by saying affirmations such as:

“Mother Kundalini please awaken within me the powers and the guru qualities of Shri Abraham. Please give me the power of faith, of complete surrender and moral strength that Shri Abraham has, so I can be a pure and strong sahaj guru.“

The above affirmations can be said in the silence of our heart with the left palm wide open, resting upwards in our lap, absorbing the energy from the source, while the right hand is placed firmly on our stomach. We can use the  sahaj guru mantras or affirmations several times for any (or all) of the ten primordial masters and experience their healing and energizing powers. Then we can check the vibratory status of the Void (Guru area) or simply remain in meditation for a longer time, of course, in thoughtless awareness.

It is important to realize that the Primordial Guru is one and the same with the Cosmic Being, only that  it comprises the Teacher-Guide-Guru qualities in a correcting force, filling the big gap between human awareness and Divine awareness and that gap can only be filled by a Guru, who himself is complete.   The Primordial Guru (such as Shri Abraham and King Janaka) is a complete personality  that elevates his disciples (followers) to this level of understanding by which they imbibe those divine qualities existing in the Void subtle area; he is there to fulfil this gap where we have to:

Shri Mataji: “WORK OUT YOUR VOID clearly. First of all you have to know that VOlD catches when you had a wrong type of a Guru. You must know about your Guru entirely. Try to find out the character of your Guru.“

(in Sahaja Yoga is our own Kundalini motherly energy as well Shri Mataji – the founder of this type of yoga meditation )

Shri Mataji: “How her Character is expressed, how her Love is expressed. Try to remember her Forgiveness. Then you should know that you have the Guru that many people must have desired to have, who is the source of all Gurus. It is the ardent desire of even Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha to have a Guru like that. They must be all jealous of you :-). But this Guru is very elusive, so to improve your VOID, say that, “Mother (Kundalini), you are our Guru”.“

Shri Abraham`s Guru Qualities in Sahaj Summary & Quotes from Genesis

His life is a clear demonstration of  complete faith and surrender to God`s will, even under the most unbelievable circumstances or requests he was ready to absolutely trust and follow the divine. He abandoned several times his land, homes and livelihood he had made for himself and for his family; then he had to start afresh over and over again. Even his closest and most beloved family members he had to let go off  many times when his Lord told him to do so. Though always seeking peace and avoiding the troubles, Abraham had the courage to fight when he had to protect family or friends that were taken prisoners; he manifested amazing compassion and perfect fairness when he dealt with war prisoners or with his former abusive imprisoners of himself of of his family members.

The Story of Saving Lot: Courage & Leadership & Righteousness & Wisdom & Generosity & Detachment & Loyalty & Compassion & Lack of Greed

Genesis: “Now when Abram (Abraham) heard that his brother Lot was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus. So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people. And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley), after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him.

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said:

“Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe (tenth) of all.

Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’; except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.”

The Greatest Test of Surrender – Sacrificing Abraham`s Son: Isaac (in Bible) or Ishmael (in Koran)

We remember that Abraham was known as `leader of mankind`, `father or nations`, `most righteous` as well he proven himself as a life long loving husband for his first wife Sarai, as well he was genuinely faithful to her until her death (she was 124).  If we remember the stories, Sarai (Sarah) only had to suggest Abraham to go and have a child with their servant Hagar as they had no children until she was , otherwise he completely surrendered to God this family matter.

Genesis: “ So Sarai said to Abram, “The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her.” Abram agreed to what Sarai said.“

Abraham`s behaviour and (inter) actions express all the qualities that one can ask from a sahaj guru, especially that they were genuinely springing from his connection  with his God – a connection that we as sahaja yogis can easily recognize it as being one of complete yoga = union with the divine.

Self-Mastery & Morality & Chastity & Surrender & Faith & Loyalty & Generosity & Discernment & Divine Initiative

Genesis: Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.”

Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

Let`s see another powerful version of  Abraham`s Son sacrifice sacrifice, this time from:

The Koran (Quran): “So We gave him the good news of a forbearing son.  And when (his son) was old enough to help in his daily affairs, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you.  So look, what think you?

(the child) He said: O my father!  Do that which you are commanded.  God willing, you shall find me of the patient.

“And when they both submitted (to the command of God), and he (Abraham) laid him (Ishmael) face down upon his forehead (in order to be sacrificed).” (Quran 37:103)

Just as Abraham’s knife was poised to descend, a voice stopped him

“ (God) We called to him: O Abraham: You have indeed fulfilled the vision.  Lo!  Thus do We reward the good.  Lo!  That verily was a clear test.”

“And when his God tested Abraham with various commands, and he proved true to each one.” He (God) said, indeed I have made you a leader of humanity.  He (Abraham) said (requesting of God), ‘and from my progeny.”

This ultimate Test of Abraham`s complete surrender and trust in God, is reenacted every single year, in the Muslim community during the days of Hajj, on the special Yawm-un-Nahr – The Day of Sacrifice, or Eid-ul-Adhaa – or the Celebration of Sacrifice. In Sahaja Yoga any day can bring us close to a divine personality and we can feel and realize the closeness to God = the yoga= while we meditate on such Archetypes or Principles that exist as active energies with our subtle system of chakras and channels of energy.

Abraham`s Negotiation for Sodoma: Universal Compassion & Yoga Connection (Togetherness with God) & Divine Diplomacy & Collectivity & Discretion -Discernment

One last strucking example that takes us to his real level of a Primordial Guru: his amazing initiative in expressing his universal compassion for people that were complete strangers (most posibly for former enemies).

Shri Abraham had conducted his courageous dialogue with God (!) with brilliant diplomatic skills that were so beautifully imbibed with what we call `madhurya`: that pure, heartfelt sweetness in communication, where the respect and humbleness for `the other`are paramount. One more rare quality, that shows his own divinity: the power of discernment that conducted Abraham`s pure desire of salvaging all good people of Sodoma. See below this extraordinary dialogue with his beloved God, after God unveils his plans to Abraham – as to His Friend in Truth.

Torah: “And YHVH (God) said: Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, since Abraham is to become a great nation, and through him all other nations will be blessed?  For I have singled him out in order that he will instruct his children and their family afterward to keep the way of YHVH by doing what is just and right… in order that I shall bring upon Abraham all that I have spoken about him.”  (Gen 18:17-19)

Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”

The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD. Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?  What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?  Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

The LORD said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”

“If I find forty-five there,” the Lord said, “I will not destroy it.”

Once again Abraham spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”

The Lord said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”

Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”

The Lord answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”

The Lord said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”

Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?”

The Lord answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”

When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.“

  2. Rabi Ghosh

What a beautiful composition. It takes you almost to the days of this great Prophet and as if make you walk hand in hand when we surrender to God with ultimate seeking. A thoroughly joyful journey through this amazing narrative decoration. Thank you Ioana. I am fortunate to read through and learn what I didn’t about this great Master.

But,till date whatever I knew it was all like invoke Abraham and He spontaneously appears to your resue at the Void level. That’s it. He only needs to be recognized not by ‘brains’ but by ‘hearts’ to feel Him. To understand Him and to worship Him deep within for His principles and His divine mission that He lead. That He helped an entire race to be liberated.

Thank you again Ioana for this wonderful compilation…and above all the continuum in the narration as if one was the part of the other. Never felt they were all so different …yet felt like a complete Zigsaw puzzle fitted together to give the joy of reading and understanding Abraham in a more profound way.
